Academy Awards Red Carpet Fashion Google+ Hang Out On Air

Pocket Scarf Brothers: L.A. Times staff writer on all things Menswear Adam Tschorn and Nick Verreos, Los Angeles Times Headquarters--2014 Academy Awards Red Carpet Fashion Google+ Hang Out On Air

This past Monday, after filming a LIVE TV segment for Azteca America (Spanish language TV Network) discussing my "Best Oscars Red Carpet" gown picks, I went to the Downtown L.A. offices of the L.A. Times to film a live Google+ Hang Out On Air with the wonderful Adam Tschorn, L.A. Times fashion writer.

We were also going to be joined LIVE from Paris by L.A. Times Fashion Writer chief fashion critic Booth Moore. Unfortunately, right as we were about to begin, there were connection/sound problems that prevented Booth from listening to us back in the Los Angeles newsroom.

Adam and I "made it work" and continued on to discuss the 2014 Academy Awards Red Carpet and our favorite and "could have been better" picks; he made sure--in Booth's absence--to say what her thoughts were on the couture on display at the Oscars. We also answered some great questions that came in via the Google+ Hang Out from viewers and talked about what the MEN of the Oscars Red Carpet were wearing. On that subject: a big highlight was when Adam brought out his Vivienne Westwood "Pharrell" hat:

Yes, I was happy to try on this now-infamous hat and naturally, the L.A. Times staff had to take a pic of it (OK, I admit: I told them to do so!!). Overall, I had a great time and the segment was so fun to do. To be honest, it went so quickly that both Adam and I felt that we could have talked for HOURS! In case you missed it...

Annual Academy Awards: Anne Hathaway in Gucci Premiere

Sunday, March 2, 2014

Anne Hathaway in Gucci Premiere

After last year's "Academy Award Red Carpet Couture PR Debacle/Gown Swap" when the House of Valentino tweeted that Anne Hathaway would be wearing their dress and she ended up in Custom Prada....it would have been a good guess to say that Hathaway wasn't going to be wearing either of those two brands. And yes, this year, she went with a gown custom-made for her from Gucci Premiere

The halter-neckline column gown is in black crepe with silver oversized crystals on the front and waist. It's very dramatic, very 60's and the color goes well with her hair.

Gucci RTW Fall 2014: The jeweled detail on Anne Hathaway's gown was evident in the most recent Gucci Fall 2014 collection which was shown a couple of weeks back in Milan RTW Fashion Week as seen from this one dress above.

86th Annual Academy Awards: Lady Gaga in Atelier Versace Spring 2014

Lady Gaga in Atelier Versace Spring 2014

Lady Gaga, not surprisingly, wore a gown from Atelier Versace Spring 2014 at tonight's 2014 Academy Awards. She is in the new Versace ad campaign, is Donatella's muse (and vice versa!) and well, we all know the song "Donatella"...but back to what she wore: a blush/pale lilac strapless gown with Art Deco-like sequins throughout. The gown was one that was shown this past January at the "Grace Jones"-inspired Atelier Versace Spring/Summer 2014 collection.

The gown hugs and fits every curve of Lady Gaga's body. What do you guys think? Do you like the Va-va Voom Hollywood Bombshell Lady Gaga? And was the silk chiffon shawl necessary?

WHO WORE WHAT?.....86th Annual Academy Awards: Angelina Jolie in Elie Saab Haute Couture Fall 2013

Angelina Jolie in Elie Saab Couture Fall 2013

The fabulous Angelina Jolie attended the 2014 Academy Awards with her Academy Award-nominated husband (of course!) Brad Pitt. Angelina wore a golden sequined stunner of a gown from the Elie Saab Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2013 collection. The gown is all hand-done with an ivory tulle base featuring beautiful hand-sewn sequins in gold and copper. This is probably the runway sample; these gowns go for $100,000+ and while it would not be surprising they would create a new one for her, I don't think this was the case here. Notice how longer it is on the model when put side-by-side (much more "white space" toward the hem area than there is on Angelina). I have a feeling that it was shortened/hemmed for Jolie.

The blouson shape of the gown's top portion is one that Angelina Jolie LOVES...in case you have forgotten, here's a recap of Angelina Jolie: The Blouson Queen...

Angelina Jolie at the 2009 SAG Awards (left) and 2009 Critics' Choice Awards (right)--both times in Max Azria blouson shaped gowns--the one on the left, she famously wore backwards

Angelina Jolie at the 2009 Golden Globe Awards (left) and at the 2011 Golden Globe Awards--both in Atelier Versace. The one of the left is more of a blouson than the emerald green one on the right. That year, she decided to go "Blouson Lite".

WHO WORE WHAT?.....86th Annual Academy Awards: Sandra Bullock in Custom Alexander McQueen

Sandra Bullock in Custom Alexander McQueen

Academy Award-nominated "Gravity" actress Sandra Bullock wore a violet blue mermaid-shaped strapless gown in silk duchesse satin custom-made for her by Alexander McQueen and that fashion house's designer Sarah Burton. The dress features a front drape that crosses over into full pleated detail. It's an interesting gown, made well, fits her like a glove (it should, it's made FOR HER!) and I like the color...

I also love her side-swept hair style and those diamonds.

What do you thinks think of Sandra Bullock's 2014 Oscars Red Carpet look?

Annual Academy Awards: Kate Hudson in Custom Atelier Versace

Kate Hudson in Custom Atelier Versace

Kate Hudson looked absolutely stunning in this gorgeous Custom Atelier Versace silvery-ivory silk gown with hand-sewn crystals. The gown featured strong 1940s (or 80s depending on how old you are!) shoulders, a deep-v plunging neckline, a twist-knot draped front midriff/hip detail and back cowl-cape drape...

Donatella Versace's most recent Atelier Versace Spring/Summer 2014 collection featured many of these cowl-capes that were worn as hoods on the runway models (example above). I'm glad Kate didn't show up like this at the Oscars, although, it might have added SOME much needed style surprise to the 2014 Oscars red carpet.

WHO WORE WHAT?.....86th Annual Academy Awards: Charlize Theron in Custom Christian Dior

Charlize Theron in Custom Christian Dior

The statuesque Theron is another Dior spokesperson so again, not a surprise she wore Custom Christian Dior. The silk gazar and organza gown featured a sweetheart neckline with clear shoulder straps giving a look of strapless when it really was not. The neckline was the perfect frame for that OUTRAGEOUS diamond necklace. The gown had many horizontal pleats/folds beginning at the knew and trailing out into a dramatic full bottom half.

It is a very dramatic gown but nothing spectacular I think. She does look beautiful as always. I just wish she would have taken much more of a Red Carpet Gown Risk.

Oh...and by the way, she was wearing 15 Million Dollars worth of Harry Winston Diamonds!!!

What do you guys think of Charlize and this gown choice?

Annual Academy Awards: Jennifer Lawrence in Custom Christian Dior

Jennifer Lawrence in Custom Christian Dior

It is no surprise that Academy Award-nominate actress Jennifer Lawrence was going to wear Dior since she is the spokesperson of this grand French fashion house. The gown she wore was a Custom Christian Dior designed by Raf Simons strapless column dress with a slightly-flared silhouette from the knees down. It also features the very Dior-esque side peplum--an homage to "Le Bar" shape.

Her short hairstyle was "lifted up", making the look very elegant and chic I also liked the necklace and how she wears it "backwards" , having the longer part trail down her back.

Ooopsie: Oh and yes, there is the trip! In typical fashion, it wouldn't be a normal award show for Jennifer Lawrence unless she trips and (almost) falls. And she did just that as she first stepped on to the Oscars red carpet. Thank E! for capturing that moment. This might be a good omen for Lawrence. We shall soon find out.

WHO WORE WHAT?.....86th Annual Academy Awards: Cate Blanchett in Armani Prive Fall 2013

Cate Blanchett in Armani Prive Fall 2013

I predicted that Academy Award-nominated "Blue Jasmine" actress Cate Blanchett would wear Giorgio Armani and Armani Prive to be more specific. She's his muse and very loyal to his creations. She went one Couture Season back to find this nude-colored hand sequined gown from Armani Prive Fall 2013 collection. It is a STUNNING gown and the beading is INCREDIBLE. Up close, this gown is a work of art and craftsmanship. And it should be since it is Haute Couture.

Cate's hair and makeup looked flawless and I especially love those earrings...

Chopard Earrings

And by the way, if you are keeping count, this is the SECOND gown from that same Armani Prive Fall 2013 collection that Blanchett has worn--she wore a black/nude gown from Armani Prive Fall 2013 for the 2014 Golden Globes:

WHO WORE WHAT?.....86th Annual Academy Awards: Lupita Nyong'o in Custom Prada

Lupita Nyong'o in Custom Prada

THE Fashion Girl of the Moment, "12 Years a Slave" star and Academy Award Best Supporting Actress nominee Lupita Nyong'o looked resplendent and Goddess-like in a Goddess Gown made just for her by the Italian fashion house Prada. The Custom Prada gown in baby blue color (Lupita said the color reminded her of Nairobi so we can call this "Nairobi Blue"). It featured tiny hand-gathers, a plunging deep-v neckline in the front AND in the back as well and a waist-cinching waistband and very full gathered skirt.

I predicted that Lupita might wear a fuller ball gown shape--and this beautiful dress falls under this category. At first sight, I would have bet money that it was from Elie Saab Haute Couture but alas, it was not. This Custom Prada gown also has a definite Madame Grès vibe...

I also love her simple headband and earrings; just gorgeous.

WHO WORE WHAT?.....86th Annual Academy Awards: Amy Adamss in Gucci Premiere

 Amy Adams in Gucci Premiere

The Academy Award-nominated "American Hustle" actress Amy Adams stepped onto the 2014 Academy Awards red carpet in a deep blue strapless gown from Gucci Premiere--the Couture arm of the Italian fashion house. The gown featured a clean column silhouette with below-the-knee flare and train. the bust line was accented with a self-fabric "collar". The fit on the dress was FLAWLESS!

Amy's hair was swept up and stunning, as well as her clean-yet-elegant makeup. And she accented the look with unique Tiffany & Co. Earrings. She looked very Hollywood Starlet.

Annual Academy Awards Red Carpet Predictions: Cate Blanchett

Tuesday, February 25, 2014

Actress Cate Blanchett

The "Blue Jasmine" Academy Award-nominated Actress, Cate Blanchett, is a Fashion Muse--with
her perfect model stature, lean figure and almost regal demeanor. Although
Blanchett is known to be an Armani loyal fan and wore one of his creations beautifully
at the 2014 Golden Globes, she has worn different designers lately. Of note,
she looked fabulous in Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci at the 2014 Screen Actors Guild
Awards
...

Blue Jasmine Ball Gowns: Two looks from Armani Prive Spring 2014 Haute Couture collection

For Sunday's 2014 Academy Awards, I think
she will go back to Armani and specifically Armani Prive Spring 2014. The
designer's collection showed lots of strapless ball gowns that Blanchett would
easily wear and look marvelous in (sans the couture sequined "shower cap" of course!). These gowns are very "safe" even for Blanchett's fashion-forward standards but I feel that for such a big night, she might go that route. Would I rather hope she went the non-safe fashion route? Yes, definitely. But, we will soon see on Sunday.

Annual Academy Awards Red Carpet Predictions: Amy Adams

Amy Adams, Academy Award Nominee for Best Actress

Amy Adams is nominated for "Best Actress" for
playing a glamorous grifter in "American Hustle". In the film she
exudes a sex-a-licious vibe in those fabulous vintage Halston and Bob Mackie jersey dresses...

Reviewing her most recent red carpet appearances, I can see that possibly she
might have been "influenced" by her "American Hustle"
character. Case in point; her plunging neckline Valentino gown she wore at the 2014
Golden Globes
. Adams normally loves strong
colors and fitted shapes. With that in mind, I'd love to see her in
something
not so fitted and more "Euro Royalty" looking. One of my favorite
gowns from this most recent Paris Haute Couture fashion week was this
lace gown
with open back and bat-wing like sleeves from the Valentino Haute
Couture Spring 2014
Collection. I would love to see Amy Adams in this
gorgeous dress:

 Valentino Haute Couture Spring 2014

Open Back Couture: Valentino Haute Couture Spring 2014

This gown is completely hand-made and features such luxurious fabric with lots of texture and is great from the front and especially the back. She wore so many front plunging neckline ensembles in "American Hustle", it would be a nice departure to see back plunging. I also think the soft ivory color would look great against her skin and hair.
