WHO WORE WHAT?.....The Billboard Music Awards 2013 Red Carpet Part Two: The "Oh Dears!"

Monday, May 20, 2013

Miss Universe Parade of Nations--The Billboard Music Awards Edition: Techno/dance recording artist/Lady Gaga Little Sister, Z LaLa at last night's Billboard Music Awards 2013, MGM Grand Arena Las Vegas

Continuing with my "Billboard Music Awards 2013 Red Carpet" WHO WORE WHAT? postings, in my last post I spoke of my "Best" picks from the BLUE carpet--with Madonna, Jennifer Lopez and yes, even Miley Cyrus being some of my favorites...

Momma Dearest: Ke$ha, Madonna and Miley--Billboard Music Awards 2013

So now, of course, it's time for the "Oh Dears!". And while Madonna and Miley were in the good, Miss Ke$ha was not:

Ke$ha in Givenchy Spring 2013: OK, several things here: on a good note, I like the cascading ruffles on the neckline of this garment she has on. Also, her hair and makeup look pretty and clean. She looks sweet, like someone's very cute sister who lives in the Woodland Hills. But...it's NOT a dress but more of a top. And, there's one thing if you do not want to wear bottoms a la Madonna (SHE made it WORK!), but I'm not sure Ke$ha is making it work here. On the runway (photo above) it looks as if the original look was shown with a bottom, a skirt with geometrically cut panels. But Ke$ha was ill-advised when whoever told her she should just wear it as is, with no bottom. But that's not even my biggest concern...

Take a look at this side shot AND more importantly WHY is she wearing those ankle-strap wedges? The tunic/dress says 1 AM club-hopping in the Meatpacking District/NYC and the wedges say 1 PM brunch in Newport Beach. I'm confused by it all. Truly confused.

Carly Rae Jepsen in Dyanthe Fall 2012: Carly Rae wore this little black dress with see-thru/solid detail and some sort of side back "falls" from Dyanthe Fall 2012 designed by LA-based Greece-born Mihail Sykianakis. The dress is very Figure Skating Costume. It's not a bad dress--I really like it on the model with the slicked back hair and stacked booties. But on Carly Rae, it just looks odd. I would have definitely removed those things from the sides. If this dress was on Project Runway, I could just hear Michael Kors saying something like "it's pooping chiffon!".

Personally, I think BOTH Ke$ha and Carly Rae Jepsen would have looked cuter in one of my "NV Nick Verreos" dresses like these (Stylists of Ke$ha and Carly Rae Jepsen: Call Me!):

NV Nick Verreos Spring/Summer 2013 dresses: The "Larissa" and "Heidi" dresses

Now, let's continue with the "Oh Dear's" of last night:

Alyssa Milano: On a positive note (I sometimes like to start with a positive), Alyssa's hair, makeup and accessories (especially the earrings) are good. But after that, it goes sour. What is this ensemble that she's wearing? She looks like someone's mom during the first "Captain's Dinner" at her Miami-Bahamas Carnival Cruise. Was she confused where she was actually going? It just doesn't make sense.

Jenny McCarthy: Huney! What were you thinking? (I can't even start positively here). I know it's Vegas and maybe Jenny was confused (like Alyssa) and thought that she was hosting some tacky-licious pool party at Tao Beach in The Venetian, but other than that, I can't imagine why she would wear this midriff top straight out of some 1990s store in a mall (and with this skirt). Her body is--as the kids say--"Slammin'!" (do kids still say that?), but she would have looked better, well, not wearing this.

Nayer: In case you don't know who Nayer is (I didn't), she's a Cuban-American singer and a protégé of Pitbull. She's the female voice you hear in some of his songs and she also released a big hit on her own last year (with Pitbull of course). This look that she wore at last night's Billboard Music Awards was a mess. It's a black and white printed jumpsuit with a hoodie (?) and an open, very plunging (and exposing) front. She accessorized it all with black gloves, black booties and a dog. Is the dog part of her schtick?  I don't get it. Readers, please help me! What's more unexplainable is when I looked her up on the web, I stumbled upon this pic of her :

Pretty Nayer: I was struck at how pretty she is (in this pic) and therefore even more confused why she would look like a mess at last night's BMAs. File under "Ayyyy Mija!". Speaking of Ayyy Mija...

Desiree Estrada: Desiree Estrada is an LA native who sings "urban latin music" using a mixture of styles like bachata and acoustic. That's what "the web" said.  Now, let's get to that dress:  It is HOOCHIE-licious. This is one of those dresses you see on those "Ghetto Prom" tumblr sites. What is with the diagonal cut-out and the straps connecting it? She's such a cute girl so why did she feel the need to look so CHONCHEE? (Latin Hoochie).

Finally...

GURL! What. Is. That? First off, this is a singer named Z LaLa. Z LaLa is actually named Tania Muradian. Born and raised in Los Angeles, according to my web research, the 22 year-old made her debut in 2011, when she
released her first single, "Fly Away" in 14 different languages,
including Spanish, French, Hebrew, Korean, Russian, German, Armenian, 2
dialects of Arabic, English, Urdu, Italian,  and lastly, sign language. Yes, sign language. She received an invitation to the Billboard Awards and heck if she was going to miss her "Red Carpet Moment". I give her "At-a-Gurl" points for this since it does remind me of  a combination between something you see in a Gay Pride float and the Miss Universe Costume Parade of Nations (this would be so fab for "Miss Aruba"!). Can't imagine how she even sat in this during the show. It's all things KRAZEE but I think she (and whoever created this) got the last laugh because EVERYONE today is google'ing her name and she is on everyone's "Billboard Music Awards" red carpet lists, even if it's the "Most Kooky Dressed" one. She will look back at this picture in 30 years and say "What Was I Thinking?"....or maybe "Gurl, I was Hot!"

WHO WORE WHAT?.....The White House Correspondents' Association Dinner 2013 Red Carpet Part 2: The Chiffon & Structured Ladies!

Part Two of the White House Correspondents' Dinner Fashion: Chiffon Belles

"The Newsroom" actress Emily Mortimer wore a red chiffon Oscar de la Renta gown at last night's White House Correspondents' Association Dinner. I thought she looked very "proper" in this dress featuring a satin belt, banded neckline and sheer sleeves.

"Nashville" actress Hayden Panetierre wore this lemon yellow chiffon Katherine Kidd Spring 2012 gown. It was very Prom Queen. I also think there was way too much going on...from the draped side cowls to the gathered bust to the beaded looped trim hanging off of it (seriously, what the heck was that?), it was too mucheey.

And then , she had to braid her hair naturally. File under "what was she thinking?". It was all very...

"Belle" from Disney's "The Beauty and The Beast"

Singer Katy Perry wore an iridescent green silk chiffon gown from Giambattista Valli Fall/Winter 2012 Haute Couture Collection. This gown--estimated at over $50,000 if she were to buy it (it's Haute Couture and hand-made, kids!), fit Katy very nicely. Notice the immense amount of fabric that is gathered into the bust and waist. It was accessorized with a gold Giambattista Valli Haute Couture "belt" as seen in the above photo.

"Homeland" actress Morena Baccarin looked fabulous in this navy blue strapless slight high-low chiffon gown from J. Mendel. Modern, simple, Grecian Goddess...it's all there.

"Modern Family" Sofia Vergara wore this deep teal blue Grecian Goddess-styled gown featuring perfect shirring on the bust, criss-cross midriff/waist and slightly gathered full skirt. Her lavender-colored earrings, bracelets and ring as well as her gold clutch were the perfect accessories.

Structured Divas:

"Mad Men" actress Jessica Paré looked GORGEOUS and was one of the Red Carpet standouts of the night in a midnight blue Antonio Berardi column one-shoulder gown. It featured architectural structured detail around the shoulder and neckline.

"House of Cards" actress Kate Mara went minimalist in this ivory Prada structured column crepe gown with bow neck detail and three-quarter sleeves. The dress is cut well, (it has to be when it's that basic!), and I love her severe side-parted, slick hairstyle.

"Downton Abbey" actress Michelle Dockerty looked amazing in this purple sleeveless high-neck crepe-and-chiffon gown with structured peplum detail from Elie Saab Ready-to-Wear Fall 2013.

Finally, I must highlight one boy: Bradley Cooper. Just look at him. No, seriously, look at him. Perfection in a double-breasted tuxedo. He looks more like a billionaire Euro Prince than an actor. And I LOVE it!

WHO WORE WHAT?.....The Latin Billboard Awards 2013 Red Carpet Part Two: The HOMBRES!

Sunday, April 28, 2013

Now, it's time for the Hombres of Premios Billboard/Latin Billboard Awards 2013--

First Up...The "Muy Bueno!":

Adrian Carvajal: Telemundo telenovela actor Adrian looked PERFECT in his blue fitted suit and skinny silver-gray tie

Gabriel Coronel:
Venezuelan-born actor looked so sleek in his chic tuxedo at the Premios
Billboard 2013. Definitely one of my favorite Men of the night. It was
classic but the styling of the tuxedo looked directional and young.

Emilio Estefan: Music
Industry Icon Emilio Estefan looked dashing in this double-breasted
suit with skinny tie and pocket hanky. Well done Emilio! I didn't expect
anything less from you. He looks like he OWNS the entire Latin Billboard Awards!

Carlos Vives:
Colombian singer, composer and actor Carlos Vives and his wife, former
Miss Colombia Claudia Helena Vasquez. Both looked elegant, classy and
were probably one of the best-dressed couples of the night

Robi Draco Rosa and Marc Anthony: Open
Collar/Tie-less boys...Both Robi Draco Rosa and Marc Anthony opted for
the no-tie open collar look. I LOVE the shawl-collar of Robi's tuxedo
jacket and Marc's notched collar jacket fit him well. He could have done
without the necklaces however.

Chino y Nacho: Venezuelan pop duo Chino y Nacho did a bit of matchy-matchy of their own with their tie-less open collar looks. I'm a bit "on the fence" with their outfits. I like the colors and at least the suits fit very well. Look, I'm just happy they're not wearing THIS MESS anymore:

The "Are You On Vacation in the Amalfi Coast?":

Nengo Flow and Plan B: Let me start by saying that I do like these looks, but for a nice dinner al fresco
in the Italian Riviera...or for an afternoon press junket for the Latin
Billboard Awards. But for the actual Latin Billboard Awards red carpet?

Dyland & Lenny: Speaking
of couples...Puerto Rican reggaeton duo Dyland & Lenny look
sleek and stylish in these looks but I can't help but think how they
also look like two boyfriends attending the GLAAD Media Awards. Just
sayin'

 The "Uh Oh!":

Ariel Texido: Telenovela actor
Ariel is a cutie. But, what was he thinking with this outfit? The
too-long pants, those BROWN shoes, the v-neck t-shirt and that scarf??? Que paso?

Pee Wee: Oh
Pee Wee, I think you are sooo cute! Really. But what's up with the
un-tied bow tie. I don't care what your stylist told you, they were
wrong. On a good note: I like the silver sheen suit, that is very nice.

Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas: You
know what's taboo? This outfit. This was "different" and original four
years ago. But now, it's a mess. Really. Let it all go to the Hard Rock
Hotel Museum. NOW.

WHO WORE WHAT?.....The Latin Billboard Awards 2013 Red Carpet Part One: The "Muy Bueno", Pageant Chicas, Prom Girls and "Ayyy Mija!"

Paulina Rubio--Premios Billboard 2013--Coral Gables Florida

This past Thursday, April 25th, the Premios Billboard 2013--the Latin Billboard Awards--took place at the Bank United Center in Miami (actually Coral Gables, Florida). The Premios Billboard de la Musica Latina is an award show which began in 1990 and has been televised on the TELEMUNDO Network since 1999, honoring the Top Billboard Chart musicians in the Latino Music World. Now, more importantly, let's get to the Alfombra Roja, or Red Carpet.

I've been to a lot of these Latino Awards events--such a Premios Juventud when I designed outfits for the Chica Orbit---and it's always a BLAST, and it's always fun to see what my Latino "brothers and sisters" will turn up in. Sometimes it's Muy Bueno but a lot of the times it's "Ayyyy Mija!"...and I LOVE IT! The top Trends included LONG gowns, and Pageant Girls, as well as Prom looks, there were some mini looks as well.  And for the men, well, that's coming up in Part Dos...so let's get right to it:

 The Pageant Chicas

Cynthia Olavarria: Cynthia is a former "Miss Puerto Rico Universe" and competed in the Miss Universe 2005 pageant--she's also a model, TV host and actress. Naturally as a former Pageant Girl, she gave you pageant and Red Carpet Fab, all at once. It's pretty fabuloso, this strapless ivory with gold applique gown with mermaid shape. It helps that Cynthia is STUNNING!

Gaby Espino: Venezuelan telenovela actress and model, Gaby Espino wore a long white princess-seamed gown with sprinkled sequined detail at the shoulders and neckline. It was VERY Pageant and very Figure Skating Costume. I  don't think she necessarily needed that gold belt. It looks like it doesn't belong.

Dad Dager: Venezuelan actress Dad (yes kids, her first name is Dad!) wore a canary yellow (a very HOT color for Spring 2013!) strapless gown with side slit, cascading ruffles and black satin ribbon belt. It's very "Pageant Girl Lite"

Daniela Navarro: Red, princess-seamed mermaid shape and sequined applique...it all equals to Pageant Girl! Daniela is a Venezuela-born telenovela actress (seems like a trend here!). For the Premios Billboard 2013, she wore this very Pageant-style gown in red with a high boat neck with sequin applique detail and horsehair stiffening hem trim. The braided hairstyle and matching red clutch was just Too Mucheey for me. The stylist should have chosen a gold clutch and just given her a chignon.

Natti Natasha: Dominican Reggaeton and Latin pop singer Natti wore this royal blue head-to-toe sequin gown for the Latin Billboard Awards last week. It's just a little "cheap", in terms of the fabric. I can get this at JoAnn's--for $5/yard. Let's be a little more innovative here. Por Favor. But on a good note, she was covered up and not looking HOOCHIE like some of those other Reggaeton ladies.

Catherine Siachoque: Colombian telenovela actress Catherine--known for her VILLAINESS DIVA roles--wore a very Pageant fab one shoulder black and nude gown for the Latin Billboard Awards 2013. The dress is OK if not a little bit "been there done that", but I just have a problem with that side-swept hair style and dangling earrings; it's so 1996.

Natasha Dominguez: Telemundo Network actress and First Runner Up at the Miss Venezuela 2008 pageant and Finalist to the Elite Model Venezuela 2006 Contest Natasha wore this black sequined gown with bias-binding trim front neckline detail. I would have removed those dangling things ASAP and then, I would have chosen better heels. Just sayin...

Los Horoscopos de Durango: They are one of the longest running recording groups in the Regional Mexican genre performing Duranguese banda music. Good for them. But their red carpet gowns: Oh HUNEY: Pageant Girls Meets Tejano. Look at these girls. Seriously. Look at them.  I am both IN LOVE and at the same, I want them to be on RuPaul's Drag Race. Like mañana! BTW: Is that Mary Hart in the middle --the sexy version???

Well Done:

Maritza Rodriguez: Colombian telenovela actress Maritza Rodriguez shined on the red carpet with this strapless peplum mermaid blue organza gown. The BEST of the night, for sure.

Leslie Grace: NY-born singer-songwriter of Dominican descent, wore this red gown with black waistband gown for the Latin Billboard Awards 2013. She looked elegant, classy and very lady-like. I also LOVED the contrast clutch. The belt and her hair accessory is a little too matchy-matchy but other than that, well done.

Michelle Vargas: Dominican Republic-born telenovela actress and model Michelle Vargas, was one of the stand-out's of Thursday night's Billboards Awards red carpet. Her light blue-green gown fit her perfectly and was styled in a minimal way. The bodice on the dress is gorgeous!

Adamari Lopez: Puerto Rican actress and host of Telemundo morning show "Un Nuevo" looks FABULOSA in this canary yellow chiffon "Goddess" gown. Everything fits right, the plunging neckline, the draping, the side draped cowls, the train...it's a hot minute from going into "Pageant" territory, but the sleeked hair and minimal accessories brings her into Red Carpet mode!

Elizabeth Ortiz: My Lifestyle Magazine President Elizabeth Ortiz looked GREAT on this apple green plunging neckline gown with goldbelt. Love the color and sleekness of the dress. Very modern.

Daisy Fuentes: Daisy Fuentes wore this black and silver gown and looked perfect for the night.

The Prom Chicas

Paulina Rubio: Pink and short. Get used to it.

Crash: Prom Fab-a-Licious nude tulle and black strapless dress. The shoes are a little much.

Gabby Villanueva and Ivana Rodriguez: : Hi-low Prom Girls. If I had to choose, I would pick Ivana on the right as my fave of these two, but seriously, did these girls go to the Prom Section at their local Macy's to buy these?

America Sierra: Bubblegum pink, strapless, tiered ruffles...The Prom Prize Goes To...singer America Sierra. I like the color but the upper bustier gathers/draping looks a little discombobulated and I think between the shape, strapless silhouette and bright color, it went to Prom Season in UN MINUTO.

The "Uh Oh!":

Rosario Flores: Spain-born Diva Rosario Flores wore a green-and-gold mini body-con dress with black peep-toe booties to Thursday night's Latin Billboard Awards. I like the dress, but maybe not on her. Not sure of the entire mix of styling, the distracting black open-toe booties and the messy hair. What do you guys think?

Felicia Mercado: Mexican telenovela actress Felicia Mercado looks like a Mother-of-the-Bride in this lace embroidered and gathered gown. The gown fits her OK and looks expensive but I think it ages her. And so does that up-do. She belongs in a very well-to-do wedding in Mexico City, not at the Premios Billboard in this gown.

Martha Pabon: Colombian actress Martha Pabon thought she was somehow going on a cruise to The Bahamas not the Latin Billboard Awards. All she's missing is her Buffet ticket and Bloody Mary. Pobrecita.

Check out what I predicted for the Premios Billboard 2013 Red Carpet when I was interviewed by "La Opinion" HERE (it is in Spanish by the way)

Next Up--Part Two: The Men of Premios Billboard/Latin Billboard Awards 2013...The Good, The "Resort Wear" and the "Uh Oh!"
